A hilarious romp through the 70's as the hippies meet Animal House.
Freaks A Farcical Tale Jim Lynch 9781496154002 Books
Freaks reads like a recap of a bygone era written by someone who was never there. It is an easy read, amusing at times, but the hippie movement just really wasn't quite that way.The progress in the psyche of the main protagonist is predictable, and the relationship outcome inevitable from very early on, but the writing style is facile enough to be entertaining.
Jim Lynch has written some top-tier stuff, this just rests near the bottom of the list. If you're new to Lynch, read Border Songs or The Highest Tide, both most enjoyable tales.

Freaks A Farcical Tale Jim Lynch 9781496154002 Books Reviews
Having been at ground zero at "Carthage State" during the incidents related in this book, I can attest to the true and honest nature of this narrative. Know the characters both real & fictional and believe me, the bad guys in this book are let off pretty easy. The fight for the soul of a campus radio station can be an ugly and damaging affair. A well written and easily readible book by two geezers which, if Johnny Keltner ever got ahold of it, could be turned into a mean rock opera.
I generally like Jim Lynch -- however this book should be left on the store shelf. It reads like it was written by someone who was not only not there, but because they weren't there -- felt complelled to try to smash one of everything they read or heard about that period -- into it. The book is severly lacking in any sort of authenticity, 'true grit' and/or creative basic research sweat required just to get in the front door of the era -- even if the attempt was 'Farcical!'
I have known the author of this book for many years, but not during his college years...
Although, FREAKS made me wince a few times, I found myself smiling and laughing a lot.
I enjoyed this novel about college life in the late 60's and found most of the people depicted in the book to be very endearing. The women are wonderful "characters". The boys are crass and a little bit nuts, which most are on their way to manhood, but the book develops into a good story line and the boys develop as well. It was well done, and I congratulate the author!
Jim Lynch has made me roar with this one! Having been running around at the time this takes place, it couldn't help but let me re-live some of our antics back then. The way he slams you in the face with some of these antics can't help but make you laugh out loud! The funniest part of his book . . .this stuff really went on, but don't tell my grand kids! This book will lighten a spirit and it doesn't matter where you pick it up . . . it's a riot! After you finish this one, leave it on your nightstand and re-read any part of it for a laugh! I want more!
Funny story. Sexy, too. Read what you did in the 60's, or what people you know were doing back then. I don't see that life is much different now; it's all human nature, and laughable, sometimes sad, thoughtful, but always funny. It's a good read and you won't want it to end. I think it would make a hilarious movie, but I'm sure that is just wishful thinking.
Sit back, put your feet up, take a wild, sexy romp through a small part of the 60's. You will love it.
You can see them in their glorious eccentricity here, deep in the South. I am from the same generation though a far away coast. Jim Lynch reminds us of the fun to be had back in the days of Sex, Drugs and Rock and Roll. Shame how so much of our generation turned out, but oh well.
With digital books, more people can express themselves without having to write a tome or have friends in the publishing business. This book is a good example of the new expressions offered by electronic publishing age. I will warn the reader that the author is a friend of mine.
I must admit I was sometimes disturbed by the book since it reflects the times of life somewhat after "coming of age" but before we actually assume life's responsibilities. The author states the book is about when hippies meet "Animal House". Well, yes and no. There are a lot of Animal House antics in the book but most of the hippies I knew usually had some pacific attitudes towards life. There are some crazy characters in this book and I hope most of them are fictional though possibly not.
The language is a little rough and there is a lot of sex. The story takes place in a small rural university during the height of the Vietnam war and for those of you that were 18 to 25 years of age then, like me, it was a scary and confusing time. Everyone was a hawk or dove with few in the middle. The fear of having to fight an unpopular war on the other side of the world made many people change their lives in a myriad of ways. Drugs became freely available, morals were loosened and people shirked responsibilities. Colleges were filled with people avoiding the draft rather than for learning. Those were strange days and this book reminded me of those days.
So when I first read the book I thought it was a crude representation of those days but actually I had tried to wipe those memories and now I have to admit that it was not that far off. I don't really know how we survived the times.
The plot is not complex but I found I wanted to see what happens next and was sorry the book did not go a little further. I wanted to know more background on each of the characters but again, back then you would meet so many strange people once.
It is an interesting read that was well written but you will need an open mind. Unfortunately, it really was like that back in those days. Enjoy it, it's only $4.99.
