Past meets present in this wonderful new historical novel from bestselling author Dean Hughes. Wilford Woodruff ’s preaching to congregations of the United Brethren in England has a profound effect on Will Lewis, but does this “new religion” really hold the key to the better life he longs for? Does he dare risk his precarious, hard-won success in order to embrace it? Can it give him the love of his life, or will it snatch her away? Will’s struggles to believe, to win his true love, and to face the rigors of immigrating to an unknown land are paralleled by the modern- day story of Jeff and Abby, a young married couple facing challenges of their own. The skillful interweaving of these two stories brings Church history to life while demonstrating how much we can learn from those who went before us. Anyone who has ever battled the winds and the waves, in some form, will love this novel.

No Dean Hughes fan will be disappointed with his return to historical church fiction. In the mold of "Children of the Promise" and "Hearts of he Children", he gives life to two valiant saints from the 1840's Midlands in England and their ancestors five generations later in contemporary Nauvoo. In Hughes' way, the story moves forward without rest, lingering only when called for by the scene and is filled with well-researched detail that places us there physically. The characterizations are richly human, the stories filled with real life and it's hardships - but threaded together with experiences of tried-faith, inspiration and the hand of Deity. Come to Zion The Wind and the Waves Volume 1 edition by Dean Hughes Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

I've never read a book by Dean Hughes, so I didn't know what to expect in style and substance.

The author has the ability to nail human emotion and give a descriptive enough narrative that allows the reader to imagine the sight, smells, and environment of the time. Several parts of the book even left me on the verge of tears. As a reader, you can really envision the trials and tribulations that the poor had to endure in early industrialized Great Britain. This empathy continues to grow in the reader throughout the book. By the time you finish, you feel like you just read a story about your own distant family and the hardship they underwent in their voyage to America as immigrants.

Note, I think this book is great for non-mormons and mormons alike. It's more of a story on the commonality of the human spirit--our joy, our tears, and our dreams.

I look forward to the sequel! Great book!
I loved this book! I loved how two families from two different time periods were woven in to one story. My family had actually taken a road trip to my husband's family reunion to Louisianna and then on to Nauvoo for the pageant and three days of touring the sites there. It was as we were driving home through Kansas when I got the part where a young couple arrives in modern-day Nauvoo. It was so sareal as they drove through the city because I was just there and I could see exactly where they were going in my mind. It made it so real! Loved the book even if it did leave me hanging) Can't wait for the next one!!!!
I'm not sure just where this book is going It is telling how the world is at this time that the book is written about It is interesting to read about the times of that era It was a hard life for the poor, knowing they would never be anything but poor for generations I'm just glad I live now and in this free country of the United States of America We really don't have such class distinction as it was at that time in those countries. I am enjoying the book but it moves too slow.
After completing the body of the book I was left feeling the book was okay. Then after reading Authors Comments and Acknowledgements which included honest and extensive research, I really felt more appreciation for the book.
enjoyed, thought it was a little political for the time period. i mean, did they worry about a socialist government taking over England in the early to mid nineteenth century? i thought the author showed his leanings here, which distracted from the story. Otherwise, it was fun and informative. We loved the authors series of the family during the 2nd world war. It is my parents time period,(or at least when they were children) and was very welcome when my dad was so sick and they were so house bound, these books meant a lot.
This series was "highly" recommended to me - but I found the first book to be somewhat nauseating. What bothered me the most was the stereo-typical way Mr. Hughes evidently thinks women think. The first heroine was hard enough to take, but when the second heroine began losing her spontaneity and becoming like the first, I had to put the book away. I am so not a feminist - but I'd like to see a lot more spunk and personality in the characters I read about.
Dean Hughes' work is always very readable. In this case I enjoyed the story of Liz and Will in England a great deal, even the conversion story. But the trip on the ship, although probably accurate, was as tiresome to read as the actual event for those who lived it. I also couldn't help thinking I read these things many times in church history and The Work and the glory. Knowing what's in store for these people reduces the tension I like to feel.

I do like the structure of the story--the juxtaposition of the pioneer couple and the contemporary Jeff and Abby. It was interesting to see the differences, but also the similarities. I've given it 4 stars because I like the writing style but in all honesty I probably won't read the series. But that says more about me than it does the book.
